Jesus Entered Our Darkness to Bring Us Light

When Jesus cried out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”, He wasn’t just quoting Psalm 22—He was stepping fully into our brokenness. Into our darkness, our lonesomeness, our failures, and even the feeling of God-forsakenness. He was entering into our human condition.
Psalm 22, which begins with those very words, is a powerful prophetic picture of Jesus’ suffering. It describes the crucifixion in vivid detail—His hands and feet pierced, His bones exposed, His garments divided. But it doesn’t end in despair. It turns toward hope: “You have answered me… I will declare your name… all the families of the earth shall worship before You.”
God did not abandon Jesus in death—He answered Him. And through death, Jesus saved the world. Heaven came down, as the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom, signaling that God’s presence is no longer hidden. The earth quaked, graves opened, and saints walked the streets. Heaven invaded Earth.
This is the gospel: not just that we get to go to heaven someday, but that the Kingdom of Heaven has come near—here and now. In Jesus, God met us in our suffering and brought resurrection life. And it’s not over. Generations will declare, “He has done this.”
Jesus is the Savior. Share the good news. Let the nations remember and return to the Lord.
